If you live in Burghfield, Burghfield Common, Burghfield Bridge or the surrounding area, and you’re looking to start training in the martial arts, then the White Oak Aikido club offers beginners’ classes near Prospect Park, just off the A4 into Reading. If you don’t know much about Aikido, then youAikido near Burghfield Berkshire can read more about martial arts training in Reading, or you are very welcome just to come along for a free taster session and have a go – that's the best way to find out if Aikido is for you, and you’ll be able to meet the instructors and your future training partners, as well as asking any questions you may have.

A brief intro to Aikido

Japan has had a turbulent history and the techniques of Aikido are derived from those used by the fearsome samurai. However, O Sensei, the founder of Aikido, evolved these techniques and added a new dimension to these martial arts that we express as “...the way of the warrior … the way of harmony”. Effective Aikido training will allow you to develop a great deal of power in your movements and your techniques, without the need to build a lot of physical strength. That’s because we’ll train you to use your whole body in an effective and co-ordinated way to attack the weakest points in an opponent’s body and posture, whilst also focusing on ensuring everyone’s safety and enjoyment during training. This all goes to make Aikido an excellent method to adopt for both self-defence and self-development.

What's it like to train at the White Oak dojo?

We have a number of instructors at White Oak Aikido, including a 4th dan female coach and a 6th dan male coach, both of whom hold the award in Education and Training, whilst all our coaching team are qualified under the British Aikido Board coaching scheme. By its nature, Aikido is a fascinating, enjoyable, interesting and challenging martial art, and we go out of our way to ensure that all training is conducted in a non-competitive, non-aggressive atmosphere. We’ll encourage you to learn, grow and be confident in your new Aikido skills.

The Foundations Course – Aikido for beginners

After your free taster session, you’ll be invited to join the Foundations Course. The course comprises one session a week for eight weeks on either the Sunday afternoon or Thursday evening at our dojo at the YMCA and costs £60. The cost also includes access to the White Oak Aikido training video, which covers everything you need for your first grading, as well as the White Oak Aikido e-handbook. You're very welcome to train at additional sessions at the YMCA or at Caversham on Tuesday evening as well, if you wish.
