What you'll be
learning
I teach a short
form of the Yang style Tai Chi of Yang Chen Fu, as
taught to me by my teacher Paul Cavel.
This is an ideal Tai Chi for beginners, designed
to open up the body and move smoothly through the
form with relaxation, balance and circularity - it
is a truly beautiful and beneficial thing to be
able to do!
Benefits of Tai Chi
Research by Harvard
Medical School indicates that Tai Chi is
beneficial for the heart, nerves, muscles and bones,
as well as the mind and the immune system. It can also
benefit your proprioception, flexibility and balance,
helping to reduce the risk of falls in older people.
Tai Chi can reduce stress, and it’s even suggested
that it can enhance your productivity, your creativity
and your sports performance. Recently, the BMJ
published a study
into the benefits of Tai Chi for treating
insomnia. And those are just a few of the benefits of
Tai Chi and Qigong that Taoist masters have known
about for hundreds or thousands of years.
All these benefits and more don’t come just from
attending a class once a week. There, you will start
by learning the outer form before going deeper into
Tai Chi. However, most importantly, to benefit and
enjoy your Tai Chi, you need to establish a personal
daily practice, a time for you that you can look
forward to every day. Daily practice helps you learn
and embody the movements of the form, so you are ready
to move on in the form at your next weekly class.
Practising every day, even if
just for a short time, will also help you
re-educate your body to move without stress and strain
as you evolve your movement to be softer and more
circular, relaxing your muscles rather than tensing
them, getting your mind into your body, and softening
the action of your joints.
